Plastic deformation of polycrystalline vanadium at low temperatures
Tensile tests were made on commercially pure vanadium to evaluate effects of grain size and strain rate on yield stress and flow stress between 293 and 20 K; at and above 77 K, V deformed solely or predominantly by slip; at 20 K, deformation was associated with twinning; both deformation processes were found to obey same yield stress/grain size relationship; susceptibility to fracture of V, compared to other bcc metals, is discussed.
