Single tunnel crew shuttles between two headings
Construction techniques in which one crew per shift is alternating between headings in novel tunneling sequence used at Allegheny Mountain east of Pittsburgh; mountain consists of hard shale with interspersed layers of very hard gray sandstone, inclined up to 20°; tunnel is driven to horse-shoe cross-section, 27 ft 3 in. by 33 ft 4 in. pay line dimensions; steel support ribs are set as headings advance; drilling at both headings is done with specially designed drill units.
