Beams climb ladder-like columns
Precast concrete structural system used for 5-story research building in Boulder, Colo, features exposed ladder-like columns on opposite walls; 54-ft high unit consists of 2 vertical members braced at each story height by 2-ft long cross members; ends of 2-ft wide by 6-in. deep floor beams are supported on rungs; 4 interior rows of square precast concrete columns between rows of exterior ladder columns are spanned 19-ft by prestressed girders to support alternate lines of beams spaced 9 1/2 ft apart; 2 other exterior walls are framed with single columns; cast-in-place elevator and stair tower in center of walls brace structure against wind forces.
