Colorado tests prove instruments satisfactory
Favorable conclusions reached as result of study to determine correlation between nuclear test results and those obtained by conventional test procedures were used by Colorado Dept Highways in project which involved 1,600,000 cu yd of embankment, including about 250,000 cu yd of material with 35% in 1 1/2-6 in. size; to test coarse gravel, first nuclear testing instrument intended solely for actual routine field service was purchased; nuclear test appears to be especially beneficial in controlling compaction of granular materials and may be of lesser advantage for determining density and relative compaction of soils.
