Construction of new railway station at Johannesburg
Construction involved demolition of most of old station and expansion into adjoining sports grounds; 16 passenger platform walls and tracks and 2 through merchandise tracks were provided, as well as parcels and milk platforms and warehouses served by rail and highway; new station is at level 13 ft below old one and platforms and tracks are covered by continuous reinforced concrete deck 20 acres in extent at approximately street level; 5 new road-over-rail bridges were built at or near station precincts and 4 existing bridges were reconstructed.
