Long concrete cylinder piles for deep-water platform
Total of 200 Raymond spun cylinder piles 192 ft long support offshore natural-gas conservation plant of Compania Shell de Venezuala built in water 81 ft deep in Lake Maracaibo; test pile driven to clay stratum 175 ft below lake level required 3700 blows by Raymond 5/0 hammer and supported 400 tons with settlement of 1/8 in.; piles, with OD of 36 in. and 5-in. concrete wall, were manufactured on lake shore; Cen-Vi-Ro process was used to spin sections 16 ft long, which were connected by stringing high tensile wire through conduits in wall and prestressing it.
