Air pressure stiffens piles that flexed in tough ground
Method employed at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center at Clear Lake, near Houston using air pressure to stiffen hollow steel shells enough to keep them within driving tolerances when piles were drifted off plumb in resistant ground; disk of 7/8-in. steel plate was welded into upper end of each 3/16-in. thick pile shell, and air-hose coupling was welded into side; regular and pressurized piles were driven with 3/4-in. tip-closure plates.
