Hollow precast concrete units of great size form bridge substructure
Because of foundation conditions of piers for Richmond-San Rafael Bridge at San Francisco Bay, "bell bottom" type piers were specified, and constructed under water, using tremie concrete; each pier is supported by H-piles longest of which is 194 ft; precast bottom shells are set by floating derrick; two precast hollow shafts connected by cast-in place diaphragm are immediate supports of superstructure.
