Project of North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board includes dam 73 ft high and 1360 ft long which, for major part of length, was constructed from foundation level in prestressed concrete; tendons, each comprising group of high tensile steel bars, are anchored in pits excavated in rock; economic aspects which led to adoption of prestressed concrete; factors determining magnitude of prestress; comparisons with gravity dam on factors of safety and cost. (See also Instn Civ Engrs -- Proc v 6 Mar 1957 p 409-28 (discussion) 428-44)
