Experiments on the magnus effect
Describes three different arrangements for measuring Magnus effect, (1) a cylinder of cardboard provided with spindles sliding on glass rails; (2) two spheres of celluloid with wooden axles on which is wound same suspension but in opposite senses; (3) celluloid sphere is surrounded by ring of tinplate; axis ends in needle point and needle's eye; this is suspended in triphase field and by burning the thread is allowed to fall on smoked concave mirror; rotation speed of spinning ball is obtained stroboscopically, and on reversal of field separation of traces gives Magnus effect in current of air.
