Points out that only fundamentally sound means of avoiding knock is engine design which permits mechanical cooling to control ignition temperature and pressure; pending adoption of such a design, next best solution is use of detonation retarder such as tetraethyl lead; experiment using gas mixture containing 1/1000 part of lead tetraethyl has shown that premature explosion is perceptibly diminished by this substance.
