A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Concrete pavement, 8 in. thick, is supported on 4 in. cement treated base, and asphalt shoulders on similar 6 in. base, to support snow removal equipment and trucks in California's east-west interstate 80 highway; 5 mi experimental section, reinforced with wire mesh, has given satisfactory service and freeze thaw test of aggregates before use proved their ability to withstand rigorous climate; sand and salt control ice and snow; aggregate proportions and unit costs for excavation and for concrete pavement given.
