Flexible pavements built on sand subgrades in Perth area, western Australia
Laboratory study of laterite gravel pavements overlying sand subgrade; pavement-subgrade system was contained in tank designed to simulate field conditions; deformations under plate loads corresponding to maximum permissible vehicle wheel loads were observed; effects of pavement thickness, moisture content and density were investigated; test results gave optimum pavement thickness of 6 in. independent of all variables except sequence of construction; field study confirmed results obtained by laboratory method.
