Highway corrosion problems -- Metallic culverts and reinforced concrete bridges
Two major corrosion investigations by California Div of Highways described indicate that factors in environment can be related to accelerated corrosion; life of culverts was primarily influenced by pH or hydrogen-ion concentration combined with resistivity of soils and water in culvert environment; chart for estimating culvert life is given; in second study correlation was determined between corrosion damage to reinforcing steel on bridge substructures and concentration of chlorides in soils and waters; equation derived relating variations in concrete mixes and depths of cover over steel to time when corrosion of reinforcing steel in bridge pile would be observed.
