Scum and efflorescence on brick and masonry
Efflorescence and scum can be ascribed to soluble salts in raw clay and to soluble salts formed during drying and firing; formation may be prevented by eliminating sulphur dioxide from drying installations; maintaining high temperature in driers, rapid circulation of air, and keeping moisture content low. (See also Tonindustrie-Zeitung vol. 54, n 100 Dec. 15 1930 pp. 1554-1555)
