Sound transmission in dwelling houses
In considering sound insulation, distinction must be made between air-borne and fabric-borne sound; for first, thickness of walls and ceilings is important and walls of wood, gypsum board, or similar light materials are less effective than those of brick or concrete; walls built up of several layers give good results; insulation for fabric-borne sounds, such as footsteps, presents different problem and means of arresting vibration of structure must be sought; use of cork floor covering.
