An electric suction dredge
For building of stop banks and cutting of canals in Thames Valley, New Zealand, to prevent flooding of large areas, Public Works Department has built and is operating electrically operated suction dredge; power is taken on board vessel at 11,000 volts; main pump has 12-in. suction and discharge, designed to pump against 120-ft. head, coupled directly to 250-hp. slip-ring motor, 485 r.p.m.
