A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Some lessons taught by the Francis dam failure
Among lessons taught are that geologists do not always know whether fault is dead; dam that straddles fault should not be of masonry; dam abutting against hill that shows tendency to slide requires special precautions; arched masonry dam is less safe than straight dam if either major or minor earth movements occur; investigations of cause of failure of any enginering structure should be deliberately made by committee of research experts to whom evidence is submitted by proponents of all theories of failures.
