Orebodies occur in limestone domes, covered by Piedmont Gravel; hematite averaging 54% iron is result of substitution of Triassic limestone by mineralizing agents; local geology presents water problem; overburden is mined by shovels; drainage is completed by 7 km tunnel below water table; production in 1959 was 500,000 tons, of which 130,000 tons came from underground mine.
