Dredges suck last silt at steep rock
Two 36 in. dredges removed 160 million cu yd of silt overburden from lake bottom near Atikokan, Ont, to allow mining of iron ore deposit; dredges are 176 ft long, 50 ft wide and are equipped with 10,000 hp electric motors; 5000 ft conveyors for open pit mining; system of dams, spillways, silt settling basins, control stations and other diversionary and control measures kept development dry.
