Precast concrete segments speed freeway bridge construction
Longitudinal stressing of hollow, box-type precast concrete segments was adopted for construction of overpass bridges on Melbourne's Tullamarine Freeway; piers supporting superstructure are single reinforced concrete plates 9 ft wide, with metal rockers at top and bottom to allow for longitudinal movement; abutments are of hollow reinforced concrete construction, one having inclined front wall; piers and abutments are founded on 20 in. diam bored piles socketed into rock; erection procedure is outlined.
