Bridge foundation behavior in Alaska earthquake
Data on foundation conditions, bridge and channel configuration, and foundation displacements were collected and analyzed to assess foundation support conditions on bridge performance; bridges founded wholly on bedrock sustained little or no foundation displacement; greatest concentrations of severe damage occurred in thick deposits of saturated cohesionless soils; evidence of soil liquefaction was found in materials; bridge foundations in saturated sands and silts sustained severe displacement; recommendations for precluding bridge damage during major earthquakes.
