Glulam beams erected for freight-line bridge
Milwaukee Road erected two glued-laminated (glulam) timber beam spans, each 34 ft long, at its bridge K-44 near Bellevue, Iowa, designed to carry regular railroad traffic; each span is comprised of four 11-in. by 43 7/8 in. by 34 ft glulam beams; they are supported on bridge timbers and are fastened to them by anchor straps; beams were fabricated from kiln-dried selected Douglas fir lumber and were treated after assembly; no seal coat or wrapping was used.
