Deflection and rotation in Timoshenko's beam theory may be defined either in terms of deflection and rotation of centroidal element of cross-section or in terms of average values over cross-section; it is shown that Timoshenko equations may be more accurate if latter definition is adopted; example considered is vibration of simple-supported beam of narrow rectangular cross-section.
