Design of girders without intermediate stiffeners, on basis of current American Institute Steel Construction Specification, Part 1 is dealt with; table developed gives in compact form expressions for sectional area of unstiffened girders and for some other quantities useful in design; effect on girder weight of changing overall depth and grade of steel are clearly apparent in expressions; allowable shear stress is governed by three different formulas depending on depth-to-thickness ratio of web; contribution of web to flexural capacity; example of table use.
