Stress distribution at failure and failure modes of reinforced concrete beams with and without web reinforcement failing by shear-compression have been investigated; stress redistribution which takes place at diagonal tension cracking load is caused by internal rotation, which increases width of diagonal tension cracks; crack width is proportional to distance from center of rotation at apex of diagonal tension crack; ultimate strength of beams failing by shear-compression is dependent on location of diagonal tension crack within compression zone, and shear span ratio; diagonal tension crack is located at center of compression zone.
