Effective widths of composite beams of steel and concrete
Study described provides basis for determination of effective widths taking geometry and materials properties in section into account, assuming absence of slip between steel joist and concrete slab; harmonic series solutions are employed in determination of effective widths for various side ratios of slab and various ratios of slab thickness to depth of steel beam; solutions incorporate variation of neutral axis depth across width of wide concrete flange due to shear lag effect; case considered is that of simply supported symmetrically loaded system of slab spanning several equally spaced identical steel ribs.
