Experimental tunnels for London transport
Construction of experimental tunnel sections which will be incorporated later into new subway line; use of new type of drum digger shield with rotary cutter and special cooling system; new method of lining with cast iron and with concrete blocks; flexible jointed cast iron lining is made without bolts and has shallower flanges than conventional linings; no grouting is applied behind lining; large saving is expected by new method. (See also Civ Engr v 15 n 4 Apr 1961 p 182-5; Surveyor v 120 n 3589 Mar 18 1961 p 289-91)
