Occurrence of conchoidal fracture in overheated steel
Study of 15 different structural carbon and alloy steels overheated in hot working leads to conclusion that conchoidal fracture, usually observed only after heat treatment, is caused by precipitation of sulphide eutectic at austenite grain boundaries; tendency differs with composition; precipitation of phosphides in high-C steels is correlated with rare occurrence of conchoidal fracture.
