Derivation of formulas for diameter of penstocks for hydroelectric power plants and pumping plants based on minimum total annual cost; formulas differ from those published heretofore, in that: Scobey formula for flow of water in riveted steel and analogous pipes is used; factors are introduced to take care of entrance, bend, and other hydraulic losses; and of effect of load factor, and shape of load curve.
