Review of Telford's work at beginning of 19th century in construction of Caledonian Canal extending across Scotland from North Sea to Atlantic, including 22 mi of artificial channel; crosssection is trapezoidal, 50 ft wide at bottom, 120 ft at surface, and 20 ft deep; entire work done by manual labor; construction of tunnel through Harecastle Hill to carry Trent and Mersey Canal, and 65 mi of Gotha Canal in Sweden.
