Variations in wave characteristics for solitary waves in shoaling water are discussed; transition of wave character from solitary wave to bore is basic to understanding of problem; experimental curves representing transformation of wave height prior to breaking as well as curves giving breaker conditions are presented; theories for transformation of wave height after breaking and prediction of plunge point are presented and compared with laboratory measurements; run-up heights and wave quantities at shoreline are measured to compare with theory of bore on dry bed.
