Orthokinetic flocculation in water purification
Theory of orthokinetic flocculation has been extended to systems approximating those encountered in water-treatment plant flocculators; theory incorporates parameters representing floc size distribution, flocculator compartmentalization, and floc concentration, as well as input energy and retention period; kinetics of flocculation were studied by observing flocculation of kaolin and alum in laboratory scale flocculator and by simulating progress of flocculation with digital computer; results of these studies substantiated nature of theoretical expression and made possible determination of several size distribution functions.
