Sliding work floor speeds wet tunnel
Construction of tailrace tunnel for Lake Manapouri hydro project is cased by use of 450-ft long and 19-ft wide steel plate sliding floor with built-in tracks and switches for muck trains; three-tier jumbo on floor is equipped with 17 Gardner-Denver 123 drills using 1 1/4-in. rods; rod for burncut holes is 2 1/4-in. diam; holes are drilled 13-ft deep and pull about 12 ft; water problem is solved by pumping plant at low point in tunnel with initial capacity of 21,350 imperial gpm.
