Predicting salinity in estuary
Method used to evaluate most economical degree of control analyzed benefits, detriments, costs of water supply and alternative costs as they varied with extent of salinity intrusion into Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California; general molecular diffusion equation was programmed for analog computer to predict salinity by finite difference approximation; equation is valid when applied to natural salinity conditions up Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers; present practice of allowing almost uncontrolled intrusion, and then providing large slugs of stored water to halt invading ocean salts, requires greater amount of stored water than controlled operation of Delta water facilities.
