Impoundment water quality changes caused by mixing
Mechanical pumping was used to artificially destratify 2380-acre-ft lake in northern Kentucky; pump drew water from bottom and discharged it at surface; analysis of samples taken weekly, throughout depth of lake, showed influence of mixing on water quality; results showed warming and oxygenating of lower layers of test lake that resulted in precipitation of manganese and oxidation of sulfide; mixing neither increased concentration of any nitrogen form, or total hydrolyzable phosphorus, nor decreased clarity in surface.
