Probabilistic design of determinate structures
Expressions are derived for probability of failure of structural members and determinate structures on basis of assumption that acting load and resistances vary according to gamma probability law; methods of optimization are presented which give area of each member and geometric dimensions of structure corresponding to minimum volume; it is shown that when load and resistance obey gamma probability law, minimum volume may be obtained approximately by allocating probabilities in proportion to volumes; it is shown that minimum volume increases with coefficient of variation of resistance; method is outlined for design of determinate structures subjected to two probabilistic loads obeying gamma probability law.
