Elastic stability of practical multi-storey frames
Stability of rigidly jointed bare steel frames is examined with particular reference to primary side-sway mode of failure; simple energy method is developed for predicting approximate critical loads and this is applied to analysis of frames designed to satisfy practical criteria of strength and stiffness; results are presented for variety of loadings, dimensions and design criteria; practical frames with few bays are shown to have high critical loads, but under certain circumstances there is possibly dangerous condition for frames with many bays; method for ensuring acceptable critical load is suggested.
