Influence of thermal and strain cycling on fracture susceptibility of mild steel
Notched bend specimens subjected to cycle of axial prestraining at temperatures in range of 300 to 800 F were tested to evaluate fracture behavior of structural ABS-C, A212-B, and A441 steels; it was found that cracking occurred in some of hot-strained specimens of ABS-C and A212-B steels at loads of 87% of "yield load" when they were tested at temperatures of -80 to 80 F; some of notched bend specimens of ABS-C steel exhibited cracking during axial prestraining at temperature in range of 300 to 600 F; similarly, cracking occurred during welding at root of notches in some of notched and welded specimens of ABS-C steel.
