Comparison of three microbial bioassay techniques for marine bacteria
Abstract This study evaluates the relative sensitivity, precision, and accuracy of three published microbial bioassay procedures in an attempt to ascertain their ability to detect toxicity potential in the aquatic environments. Three known bioassay methods were compared: the dissolved oxygen depletion (DOD), the viable plate count (VPC), and the optical density (OD). Although both VPC and OD assays showed better reproducibility than the DOD technique, as indicated by lower coefficient of variation (CV) values, the DOD assay proved to be most sensitive and gave end-point reaction at lower concentrations than the VPC and OD methods.
