Epoxy coated rebars the panacea for steel corrosion in concrete
AbstractCorrosion of reinforcing steel is a destructive form of damage affecting the strength and stability of concrete structures. Epoxy coating of reinforcing bars offers an efficient and economic means of protecting the steel from corrosion. This paper presents information on the engineering properties of epoxy coated bars, and shows that it is possible to produce strong, tough and corrosion resistant coatings. Data on the bendability and bond strength characteristics of these bars are reported. When exposed to natural and severe marine environments, epoxy coated bars are shown to have excellent corrosion resistant properties. Even bars with damaged and unrepaired coatings suffer corrosion damage far less than those of uncoated and galvanized bars.
