Analysis of compression of hollow circular elastomeric bearings
Abstract Seismic isolation is a design technique in which structures are mounted on horizontally flexible elements which shift the natural frequency of the structure to low values and enhance damping. Elastomeric bearings, made of interleaved rubber layers and steel plates, respresent horizontally flexible elements commonly used in seismic isolation. Design formulae for elastomeric bearings already exist but do not account for the possible significant effects of central holes in large elastomeric units. In this paper, analytic expressions for the compression modulus and maximum shear strain due to compression of hollow circular bearings are presented. It is shown that existence of holes results in reduction of compression modulus and substantial increase in shear strains.
