Studies of chernobyl debris in Denmark
AbstractThe radioactive debris from the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the USSR arrived in Denmark one and a half days after the explosion in the reactor. From April 27 to 28 the mean air concentration of radiocesium was 0.24 Bq 137Cs m−3. Other long lived radionuclides was 90Sr (5.7 mBq m−3), 239,240Pu (51 μBq m−3) and 241Am (5.2 μBq m−3). The total mean deposit over Denmark became 1290 Bq 137Cs m−2 and 38 Bq 90Sr m−2. Most of the debris was deposited in the first half of May. In the Faroe Islands the mean deposition was 2000 Bq 137Cs m−2 and in Greenland the deposit varied between 14 and 188 Bq 137Cs m−2. The radiocesium concentrations in air and precipitation in Denmark have in the first year after the accident been influenced by resuspension of the e arly Chernobyl deposit from May, 1986. The 137Cs content in Danish diet in the period May 1986–April 1987 increased by a factor of 9 compared to 1985. However, compared to 1964, when the highest contamination of Danish diet from global fallout occurred, the Chernobyl contamination only amounted to 18% of this maximum. The individual effective dose equivalent commitment from ingestion of radiocesium from Chernobyl in the first year after the accident is 17 μSv in Denmark, corresponding to approximately 1 week extra background radiation.
