Annual maximum wind speeds from parent distribution functions
Abstract Annual maximum values of hourly mean wind speeds are derived from the initial or parent distribution function and compared with those predicted by fitting a Type I distribution to both the observed annual maxima and to the square of the observed annual maxima. Two procedures to derive the annual maximum wind speed from the parent distribution are demonstrated, and it is shown that these converge with increasing return period and yield similar results to the Type I extreme-value distribution in the square of the wind speed. However, for long return periods, these procedures predict a wind speed lower than that obtained from a direct evaluation of the Type I distribution. Reasons for this discrepancy are investigated and it is concluded that a lower design wind speed is justifiable.
