Fire safe structural design
Abstract The assessment of structural behaviour in fire will become increasingly based on calculation methods in the future as they show considerable economies when compared with traditional methods. Considerable research has been carried out in recent years which enables performance prediction of steel members to be calculated with confidence. Some of this research work is reviewed in this paper. Using the concept of stress related limiting temperatures, it can be shown that many elements and sub-assemblies have a high degree of inherent fire resistance and indeed may not need the application of fire resistance materials to achieve the required fire rating.
