Nitrogen supply from mineralization of organic matter
AbstractField measurements of the course of soil mineralization of nitrogen were performed on bare plots to obtain reliable data of the N-supply from organic matter which can be used for nitrogen fertilizer recommendations. The N-release by soil humus and the N-restitution from some types of biological material were studied. Soils of the same region, with a comparable soil type and rotation system, showed limited variations in N-mineralization. Of course, N-losses by drainage or denitrification will influence the effective availability of this N-supply. The presence of large amounts of ‘young’ humus, induced by ploughing old pasture or regular amendments of slurry, resulted in an increase of mineralized nitrogen. The N-release from farmyard manure, green manure and biological waste products like crop residues corresponded quite well with calculated theoretical N-restitutions.
