The rise of plumes on the South African highveld
Abstract An experimental investigation of plume rise in a neutral atmosphere has been made at two power stations situated on a large flat plateau called the Highveld. It was shown that the basic form of an equation developed in the U.K. by Lucas, Moore and Spurr was in good agreement with the data but that values of the plume rise factor, α, were higher in the present tests. This has been explained in terms of a lower intensity of turbulence of the atmosphere resulting from the flat terrain and uniform radiation on the Highveld. The data indicates that α increases with chimney height and a tentative equation is presented but further data is required to substantiate it. For the design of chimney heights on the Highveld the U.K. equation is appropriate using a provisional value of α of 600 for stacks higher than 120 m.
