The Ayia Varvara site project: A case of urban landscape design
AbstractA project involving the planning and design of a cultural landscape in a natural area incorporated within a city centre is a rather rare phenomenon in contemporary urban design and is a subject of particular interest. This is the case in the “Ayia Varvara” project, which concerns an area of 8 ha in the city of Drama in Northern Greece. The general aim is to reconcile two apparently contradictory concepts — (1) conservation and protection and (2) creative intervention — in order to: (i) restore the site's urban character; (ii) preserve and strengthen the natural, historical and cultural memory of the area (it was once a lively and much-used area of natural springs and shallow lakes); (iii) make the site available to the townspeople and bring it back to life in a contemporary way; (iv) make the most of its potential as a site for the city's future social and cultural activities. The approach in question is an application of a “socio-ecological and perceptual” landscape analysis intended to “read” the identity and the specific character, the “spirit” of the place, projecting an image onto it, in order to create a new situation out of an interactive and continuous process.
