Probabilistic flutter criteria for long span bridges
Abstract Critical full scale wind speeds for aerodynamic instability of cable supported bridges - flutter - are assessed from wind tunnel tests with bridge girder section models. The uncertainties involved in testing and conversion to prototype critical wind speeds are investigated and described in probabilistic terms. Reliability analyses of the probability of failure due to flutter are performed. A critical design wind speed, for which section models in a scaled flow in a wind tunnel must be stable, is determined for the East Bridge across Great Belt in Denmark, such that the probability of failure due to flutter is less than or equal to a specified target safety level. The main source of uncertainty considered are related to - prediction of actual extreme wind speeds - conversion of results from model tests to prototype structure-turbulence intensity (both for model and prototype) -sttructural damping in the real bridge structure.
