Study of kinetics and mechanism of isomerization of alkyl adamantanes on catalysts prepared from alumina
Abstract A study was made of the kinetics and mechanism of isomerization of some C12C14 alkyl adamantanes, 1-methylhomoadamantane, perhydrophenalene and perhydroacenaphtene under conditions of heterogeneous catalysis on activated alumina at temperatures of 180–200° by a microcatalytic pulse method. Rate constants were determined for 12 individual hydrocarbons. The formation of a tert-adamantyl cation is, apparently, the limiting stage of isomerization of alkyl adamantanes. Results suggest that 2,4-hydride and methyl displacements take place under these conditions in adamantyl cations.
